What you need to open a professional skincare account

Before you can buy professional skincare, body care, or waxing products, most brands ask you to show you're a professional. Here is what each brand in our directory asks for, from a license to insurance and a tax ID, and which ones accept students.

The short answer

A license is the most common requirement

Context

How approval usually works

Most brands ask you to apply online and upload proof, such as your esthetics or cosmetology license. Some also ask for a resale certificate or sales tax license, and a few ask for professional liability insurance. Approval can take from a day to about a week, and some brands schedule an education call or ask you to commit to training. Some lines sell only to physicians' offices and med spas.

What to have ready before you apply

  • A current, unexpired esthetics, cosmetology, or medical license, as a photo or PDF
  • Your business name and address, and your sales tax or resale certificate if you plan to sell retail
  • Proof of professional liability insurance, if the brand asks for it
  • A menu or description of your services (some brands ask medical practices for this)
  • If you're a student, ask whether the brand offers a student account
  • Questions about the first order? See our guide to opening order minimums.

Methodology

How we gathered this

Each brand's entry comes from its own published pages: account applications, professional sites, and FAQs. The source is listed on the brand's profile with the date it was last checked. These tables update automatically as profiles are added or rechecked.

Requirements change and can depend on your state, so confirm with the brand before you apply. Brands can claim their profile to add or correct their requirements. Read more about how we research on our About page.
